The Sail House is a wonderful story of passion, history and romance. The idea for the home was born over 20 years ago when the property was purchased from one of the original land owners on Caye Caulker. At that time, the caye was a quiet fishing village which was a popular stop for divers, but still relatively unknown to most. A young carpenter from Kansas had found his way down to Central America and fell in love with the island. After several visits he decided to make it a second home and purchased the land. Over the next 15 years, Steve L. would build his dream, what we now know as The Sail House (previously the Crow's Nest). The house is beautifully constructed from exotic hardwoods. Steve's passion for building shows through in the countless details he worked to perfect over the years. The home has survived 2 hurricanes with minimal damage (hurricane season is July - August). As solid as the home is, it's the attention to detail which most people fall in love with.
- A 3rd level deck with 360 degree views of the island with ample space to gather, eat, drink or just lounge in a hammock.
- The floors are entirely beautiful dark hardwoods.
- All the windows, doors and floors are trimmed out with exotic finishes.
- The kitchen is complete with hardwoods & all the modern conveniences.
- Lastly, there is a beautifully crafted staircase which spirals up to the bedrooms. I must admit, the staircase is what sold me on this home.
Sure, the views, the island, the property, it's all wonderful, but the clincher for me was the staircase. I'm mesmerized by its simple beauty. The 200 pound hand carved blocks of teak wood fan out in unison as they take you from the main floor to the bedrooms above. It truly is a work of art. The home is painted sea foam white with an ocean blue trim to mimic the sea and sky. The white exterior also helps keep the home cool for its guests.
